The pros of artificial grass in Surrey
For most homeowners here, the upsides are what tip the decision. Our climate is hard on natural lawns, and synthetic turf sidesteps the worst of it.
- No more mud or moss. Surrey's rain and shade turn real lawns into mud and moss every winter. Turf on a draining base stays clean and green year-round.
- Zero maintenance. No mowing, watering, fertilizing, or reseeding. A rinse and an occasional brush is the whole routine.
- It drains better than your real lawn. A proper crushed-rock base and permeable backing move water through faster than soggy clay soil.
- It beats summer watering bans. Metro Vancouver water restrictions don't touch turf. It looks the same in a August drought as it does in spring.
- It lasts. A quality install runs 15 to 20 years, so it's a one-time job, not an annual battle.
- Great in shade and on slopes. Turf doesn't need sun, and it can be pinned flat on a grade that's miserable to mow.
The cons (the honest ones)
Now the trade-offs. None of these are dealbreakers for most people, but you should know them going in.
- Upfront cost. Turf costs more on day one than laying sod. It pays back over years in saved water and time, but the first cheque is bigger. We don't post prices because every yard differs, so we quote on-site.
- It can warm up in full sun. Surrey summers are mild, so it's rarely an issue, but turf in direct afternoon sun gets warmer than real grass. A quick spray cools it, and cooling infill is an option for full-sun yards.
- It's only as good as the install. A base that's skipped or rushed leads to ripples, pooling, and odour. This is the single biggest reason cheap turf fails. Done right, it's a non-issue.
- It's not a living ecosystem. Turf won't feed pollinators the way a wildflower patch would. Many homeowners keep garden beds for that and turf the lawn area.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
Synthetic turf is a strong fit if you're tired of the upkeep, your yard floods or stays shaded, you have dogs or kids tearing up the grass, or you're on a slope. It's less essential if you have a thriving sunny lawn you genuinely enjoy maintaining.
It's especially popular in areas like South Surrey, where newer Grandview Heights builds sit on water-holding clay and older Ocean Park yards lose grass to shade. Both are textbook cases where the pros clearly win.
How to decide
The best way to weigh it for your own yard is to have someone look at it. A residential artificial grass installation depends entirely on your space, drainage, and access, so a real on-site assessment beats any online calculator.
