How We Engineer & Install Artificial Turf in Surrey

Site Survey & Gradient Assessment
Every installation starts with a proper site survey. We measure the area, map any level changes, and calculate the fall needed to drain Surrey's average 1,500 mm of annual rainfall. We check existing drainage infrastructure, identify low spots, and confirm access for equipment. This data shapes the entire base design before a single shovel goes in.
Excavation & Sub-Base Engineering
We excavate 100–150 mm (4–6 inches) for a standard residential install — deeper for heavy-use or pet areas. The excavation removes organic material, topsoil, and root matter that would decompose and cause settlement. Sub-base depth is calculated against expected load, drainage requirement, and existing soil permeability. Edge Restraints & Perimeter Anchoring
Before turf is rolled out, solid perimeter restraints are set. We use bender board, timber edging, or aluminium channel depending on the site — always anchored with galvanised spikes at 300 mm centres. Correct edge restraints are what prevent the telltale 'lift' at corners and straight edges that shows up on cheap installs within a year or two. All edging is set flush to the finished turf height so there are no trip hazards.
Turf Orientation & Pile Direction
Synthetic grass has a pile direction — the way the blades lean — and it has to be considered before cutting. We always orient turf so the pile faces toward the primary viewing angle (usually the house or patio), which gives the deepest, most natural colour. Infill Application & Distribution
Infill is spread using a drop spreader at the manufacturer's specified rate — typically 4–6 kg per square metre for a residential lawn, higher for pet areas. We apply infill in multiple passes at 90-degree angles to each other, raking between passes for even distribution. Even infill depth is what keeps blades upright, protects the backing from UV, and gives the lawn its weight and stability. We weigh infill bags to confirm the rate before we start, not after.
Power Brushing & Blade Erection
Once infill is down, the entire lawn is power-brushed against the pile direction using a rotary broom. This stands the blades upright, distributes the infill evenly to the backing level, and removes any residual debris from installation. We typically make three to four passes, alternating the angle, until the lawn has a consistent, full appearance across the whole area. The difference between a brushed and unbrushed install is visible from fifty feet.
Drainage Rate Verification
Before we pack up, we confirm drainage is working. For every install, we do a hose test — saturating a 1 square metre section and timing how fast water clears. Here's a full breakdown of what goes into a properly built turf install.
Synthetic Grass Fibre Types
The blades of synthetic grass are made from one of three polymer families. Each has strengths suited to specific applications.
The industry standard for residential and pet lawns. Soft to the touch, UV-stable, and manufactured in a wide range of blade shapes and colours. PE turf has excellent recovery after compression, meaning it bounces back after foot traffic rather than staying matted.
The most durable synthetic fibre available for turf. Nylon blades resist crushing under heavy loads, making it the right choice for putting greens, commercial entrances, and high-traffic commercial spaces. It's firmer underfoot than PE and comes at a higher material cost, but for applications where durability beats softness, it's the correct call.
Lower cost and lighter weight than PE or nylon. Polypropylene is best for decorative uses and low-traffic areas. It doesn't hold up well under pet use or heavy foot traffic and has lower UV resistance than PE. We use it selectively — it's the right product for the right application, and the wrong one for most residential lawns.
Key Blade Specifications Explained
When comparing turf products, these are the specs that actually determine quality. Ignore them and you're choosing on looks alone.
Pile Height
25–45 mm for residential. The sweet spot for a natural-looking lawn that holds its shape is 35–40 mm. Longer pile needs more brushing to stay erect; shorter pile is better for putting and courts.
Face Weight
Measured in grams per square metre (g/m²) or ounces per square yard. Higher face weight = more yarn = denser, fuller, more durable lawn. Budget turf skimps here. Ask for the spec sheet.
Dtex Rating
The linear density of the yarn (grams per 10,000 metres). Higher dtex means a thicker individual blade — more resistant to matting and UV degradation. A quality residential blade typically runs 10,000–13,000 dtex.
Blade Shape
W-shape, S-shape, diamond, and C-shape blades all resist flattening better than a flat blade. The shape creates memory in the fibre that pushes the blade back upright after compression. Flat blades are typically found on cheaper products.
Thatch Layer
A brown or tan curly fibre woven into the turf at the base that mimics dead grass. It's what makes modern synthetic grass read as a real lawn instead of a green carpet. Quality turf always includes thatch.
Colour Palette
Good turf uses at least two greens (field green + olive or lime green) plus a tan or brown thatch tone. Single-colour turf is the easiest way to spot a cheap product from a distance.
Turf Backing & Drainage
The backing is what holds the blades in place and lets water through. In Surrey's wet climate, backing type has a direct impact on how long an install stays clean and odour-free.
Latex Backing
Standard primary backing bonded with styrene-butadiene latex. Cost-effective and widely used, but latex can become brittle over time in UV exposure and loses permeability if drainage holes are too small or too sparse.

Additional drainage holes punched through the backing at regular intervals (typically 15 mm holes on a 100 mm grid). Critical for pet areas and anywhere that takes heavy rinse traffic. Standard backing alone isn't enough for a dog run.
Infill Types: What Goes Between the Blades
Infill is not an afterthought. It weights the turf, supports the blades, protects the backing, and in pet areas, controls odour. Choosing the wrong infill is one of the most common reasons a turf lawn underperforms.
Silica Sand
Standard residentialRound-grain washed silica sand is the baseline infill for most residential installs. It's affordable, widely available, and does the job of weighting the turf down and keeping blades upright. Not the right choice for pet areas without antimicrobial treatment.
Zeolite (ZeoFill)
Pet areasA naturally occurring mineral with a negative ionic charge that traps ammonia from pet urine, dramatically reducing odour. We use zeolite in dog run areas and pet-heavy yards. It's also cooling and non-toxic, which matters in a space animals are rolling around in.
Envirofill / Acrylic-Coated Sand
Pet + UV + heatA sand core with an acrylic antimicrobial coating. Resists compaction better than plain sand, inhibits bacterial growth, and reflects more heat than standard sand. The coating is certified non-toxic (SGS tested). Good choice for high-use pet and family areas.
Crumb Rubber (SBR)
Sports / commercialRecycled rubber granules used on sports fields and high-traffic commercial installations for shock absorption and blade support. Less common in residential applications today as organic and coated alternatives are preferred.
Organic Infill (cork, walnut shell)

Cork is thermally cool, lightweight, and has natural antimicrobial properties. It compacts more than sand over time and may need occasional top-ups.

Plate Compactor
A vibrating plate compactor (typically 70–90 kg) is used to compact the aggregate base in lifts. Compaction is done in two or more passes at 90 degrees to each other. A properly compacted base doesn't settle — a hand-tamped one does.
Turf Cutter / Sod Cutter
A self-propelled sod cutter strips existing grass and root mat cleanly at a set depth. This is faster, more consistent, and less wasteful than hand digging, and it removes the organic layer evenly so the base sits on a consistent surface.
Carpet / Turf Knife
All cuts on synthetic turf are made with sharp hooked carpet knives running along the stitch rows on the backing side. A new blade is used for every cut. A dull knife drags and distorts the cut line, which shows up as a gap or a visible seam.
Seam Tape & Adhesive Spreader
Two-component polyurethane adhesive is spread onto 300 mm polyester seam tape with a V-notch spreader at a controlled 2–3 mm bead depth. Consistent adhesive depth is what makes seams hold under all weather conditions — too thin and it fails, too thick and it bleeds through.
Drop Spreader
Infill is applied with a calibrated drop spreader set to the manufacturer's specified gram-per-square-metre rate. Spreading by hand or with a shovel gives uneven depth, which leads to areas that flatten early. Spreader coverage is verified by weighing leftover material against the theoretical yield.
Power Broom / Rotary Brush
A counter-rotating bristle broom is run over the installed turf to stand blades upright, work infill evenly to the backing, and remove installation debris. Multiple passes at varying angles give a consistent finished appearance. The visual difference between a power-brushed and hand-brushed install is obvious.
Garden Hose & Flow Timer
Used for the drainage test on completed installs. We saturate a measured area and time surface clearance. A well-built base clears in under 30 seconds per square metre. This simple test confirms whether the drainage engineering actually worked before we leave the site.
Knee Kicker & Power Stretcher
For installs with wrinkle or tension correction requirements, a knee kicker and power stretcher work the turf flat before anchoring. This is especially important on irregular shapes or when working around curves where turf tension can bunch or pull.
Base Materials: The Part You Never See
The materials above the ground get most of the attention, but the base is what the whole install lives or dies on. We use Class B crushed aggregate (19 mm angular crushed rock, not rounded pea gravel) compacted in 50 mm lifts. Angular rock locks together under compaction — rounded gravel doesn't. We also use commercial-grade geotextile weed membrane, not the cheap garden-centre roll, and galvanised fixings throughout. There's nothing under the turf that will rust, soften, or decompose. That's why our installs don't develop the soft spots, ripples, and drainage failures you see on rushed jobs five years in.
